🧪 1. What Potassium Permanganate Treats
Potassium permanganate is effective for:
External parasites (Costia, Trichodina, Chilodonella)
Fungal infections
Bacterial infections of skin & gills
Removing organic waste from pond water
Improving water clarity
🐟 2. Aquarium Treatment (Long Bath)
This is the safest method for home aquariums.
✔️ Dose: 2 mg/L (2 ppm)
Formula:
➡️ 2 mg KMnO₄ per 1 liter of water
✔️ How to mix:
Take a small container of aquarium water.
Dissolve 0.2 g of KMnO₄ per 100 liters
(or 0.02 g per 10 liters).
Stir until fully dissolved.
Add slowly into the tank while circulating.
✔️ Treatment duration:
4 hours maximum
The water should turn light pink → if it turns brown quickly, the organics are high, and the treatment may fail.
✔️ After treatment:
Perform 50% water change.
Add dechlorinator (sodium thiosulfate or any aquarium water conditioner) to neutralize leftover KMnO₄.
🐠 3. Pond Treatment
Ponds require a stronger dose.
✔️ Dose: 2–4 mg/L (ppm)
Use 2 mg/L for mild treatment
Use 4 mg/L for heavy parasite infection
✔️ Formula:
2 g KMnO₄ per 1,000 liters (1 ton)
20 g per 10,000 liters (10 tons)
✔️ Steps:
Aerate the pond strongly (very important).
Mix the KMnO₄ in a bucket until purple.
Distribute around the pond evenly.
Maintain the purple color for 4–8 hours.
If the color becomes brown too quickly, repeat the next day.
🐟 4. Short-Term Dip (Very Effective for Parasites)
Use only for strong, healthy fish.
✔️ Dose: 10 mg/L (10 ppm)
Formula:
1 g in 100 liters
0.1 g in 10 liters
Treatment time:
30 minutes maximum
Stop immediately if the fish shows stress (rolling, gasping, loss of balance)
After dip:
Transfer fish to clean water.
🧼 5. Sterilizing Equipment
KMnO₄ is excellent for disinfection.
✔️ Dose:
Mix until water becomes deep purple
Soak nets, stones, tools for 10–20 minutes
Rinse thoroughly before reuse
⚠️ 6. Safety Rules (Very Important)
Wear gloves — stains skin and can burn.
Never mix with alcohol, glycerin, or other organics → fire risk
Keep away from children & pets
Store in a cool, dry place
Never overdose — fish gills burn easily.
